The Herbert Protocol

The Herbert Protocol is a national scheme being introduced locally by Lancashire Constabulary in partnership with the Alzheimer’s Society, Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service and North West Ambulance Service, which encourages carers to compile useful information which could be used in the event of a vulnerable person going missing.

Digital Inclusion

The South Ribble Dementia Action Alliance has produced a digital inclusion pack which provides information and tips on using the internet. Made with the help of people living with dementia, the booklet is a great resource for people with memory difficulties.

Hard copies are available for anybody who would like one. Please email communities@southribble.gov.uk.

“This is me” is a free, person-centred care tool developed by the Alzheimer’s Society to support individuals living with dementia, delirium, or other communication difficulties. It enables caregivers and health professionals to understand and respect the personal histories, preferences, and needs of those they support

The Butterfly Scheme

The Butterfly Scheme is used across inpatient services to support patients with dementia or cognitive difficulties. A blue or white butterfly above the bed signals the need for extra care. It helps reduce stress and improve safety, and families can assist by completing a person-centred care plan.

A Good Day, a local family-run organisation has created a range of dementia-friendly games and activities. They are designed to evoke joyful memories and encourage storytelling and mesaningufl conversations with loved ones.

Fire Safety

If you or a loved one is living with dementia, Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service offers free support to help you stay safe at home. They provide friendly advice on fire safety, including fitting and testing smoke alarms, planning easy escape routes, and making kitchens safer with simple tips like using timers and keeping surfaces clear. They also suggest ways to improve lighting in the home, such as nightlights and motion sensor lamps, to help prevent falls and confusion.

Scams Prevention Awareness

Age UK Lancashire offers free scam prevention support for residents aged 50+, helping them spot and avoid scams through home visits and personalised advice. Working with Trading Standards and police, the service covers phone, online, doorstep, and other scams to keep older adults safe and informed.

Good Day Calls

Age UK Lancashire’s Good Day Calls is a free telephone befriending service designed to support residents aged 65 and over who are experiencing loneliness, isolation, or are housebound. Operating five days a week throughout the year (excluding Christmas week), the service offers regular, friendly phone calls that provide emotional support and a vital social connection.
